Micheletti interviewed in English!

Fox news interview with Roberto Micheletti, part I

Fox news interview with Roberto Micheletti, part II

After 2 1/2 months of conflict, a major US television news source finally did the first interview of Honduran President Roberto Micheletti.

Greta Susteren of Fox News came to the island of Roatán, Honduras, to interview President Micheletti. The show was aired on Wednesday, September 16.

President Micheletti spoke in English, of which we are very proud in Honduras. Although a couple of points were not clear, we believe that it shows his desire to communicate with the American people and a lack of ego and pretension. Not very many international leaders will submit to be interviewed in a foreign language.

One part that was not clear was when Micheletti speaks of change of the constitution not being allowed, he is referring to the part about a president being re-elected, not the entire constitution. He makes that clear in the longer version of the video which unfortunately was cut from the on air version.

When he referred to the "bombs" thrown by Zelaya's UN Ambassador, he is referring to something which happened some 30 years ago, which resulted in the revocation of Jorge Arturo Reina's US visa a few years ago on the grounds of terrorism and possibly other reasons which have not been made public by the US government. Zelaya's appointment of Reina as Honduras' Ambassador to the UN was a huge slap in the face to the US and an embarrassment to the Honduran people. I wish that had been clarified.

The above videos are the segments which were shown on "On the Record". You can also view the entire 55 minutes of interviews at the Fox News site:

Micheletti Interview Part II (long version)

We do not know if Fox will show any additional segments of the interview in future shows but we hope that they do.

Fox also has an excellent video with Mitch Cummins, an American businessman who has lived on Roatán for 7 1/2 years. Mitch represented very well the views of most of the expatriates here in Honduras that I know.

Here is my absolutely favorite part of President Micheletti's interview:

VAN SUSTEREN: And so your view is that President Obama and Secretary Clinton do not have the full story. That is your view.

MICHELETTI: They don't know. I am sure they do not know.

VAN SUSTEREN: Have you ever met President Obama or Secretary Clinton?

MICHELETTI: No, no, no. I admire them, but never in my life. One day I had a telephone call from Mrs. Clinton.

VAN SUSTEREN: What did she have to say?

MICHELETTI: She asked me to find a way to return Mr. Zelaya.

VAN SUSTEREN: What did you say?

MICHELETTI: No.

That's our Micheletti. I'll bet Hillary isn't told 'no' very often.
